Solace In The City

This was “back to school” week for many people and, while I didn’t get the school-time jitters like I used to, I got the nagging feeling that summer has been slipping through my fingers more quickly than I’d realized. Having spent last weekend at the beach and in the pool (and very fortunately getting to do the same this weekend), I am longing for summer to stretch just a little bit further than usual. One of my favorite ways to enjoy summertime is to dine al fresco. When I was a little girl, my granny would invite me to dine “al fresco” with her on our porch, her porch, on a blanket in a backyard, in a park…I could go on and on. It didn’t matter where we ate, as long as we were enjoying the healing powers of nature.

This week, I found a great little market near the entrance to the 6 train, Butterfield Market. I picked up three sandwiches (2 were half priced b/c I bought them after 6pm), a peach, a nectarine, spring water, and dark chocolate. I packed up the picnic basket my parents gave us as a wedding present and we grabbed a chilled bottle of sauvignon blanc on the way to the East River Promenade for our picnic.

The Huz enjoyed a traditional tomato, basil and mozzarella sandwich while I had half a sandwich with grilled chicken, sliced avocado, white onion, lettuce and fresh alfalfa sprouts on seven grain bread.

We had such a nice time relaxing in the fresh green grass, snuggled up on our towel for a few minutes and smiled at our adorable puppy.

At home, I had a peach and a few pieces of dark chocolate for dessert and we went to sleep that night refreshed and relaxed by the wonderful power of the outdoors.

When is the last time you had a picnic?

  1. You are so fancy with that picnic set and everything! Actually, I got a pretty nice picnic bag with all the trimmings as a xmas gift from the boss last year and have only used it once. In fact, I keep one set of the utensils in my desk drawer here at work to eat lunch with! I am not making the most out of it! Picnics are great fun, though, and a great way to make the most of the city and the remaining days of summer. Also a good way to save $$! I should try and squeeze a few in soon. You’re invited, of course. 🙂

  2. Butterfield is great! Used to grab after school snacks there.

And I love love love the chickpea salad you made a few nights ago 🙂

  3. It has been WAY too long since I last had a picnic… but this post has inspired me to grab my husband, dog, a blanket, and a basket full of yummy food and hit up the park :). We received a wine set picnic basket as a wedding gift, and have yet to break it open!

  4. I love your picnic basket! The last time I went on a picnic was about 2 1/2 year ago (and two boyfriends ago). I went out not too long after and bought me a basket, but I`ve never had the chance since. Guess I jinxed myself.

  5. That’s so adorable that you had a picnic! I haven’t had one in forever.. that’d be such a great date night!

  6. I love picnics 🙂 Your sandwich sounds delicious. We have twinsies posh picnic baskets, too!

  7. Aw that’s a great dog! My wife and I (and dogs) do the exact same thing, picnics with the picnic basket we got for a wedding present. Not all that often (I mean, I am a guy), but enough, and we both really enjoy it. And we eat the same stuff as you too!

  8. Ummm…..that looks like pretty much a perfect night. The closest thing I’ve come to a picnic recently is when I take my chair-in-a-bag out to the backyard, grab a bowl of whatever meal it is and try to eat in peace while swatting away bugs and listening to my neighbor’s kids argue over whether worms are edible or not.

But I do love the outdoors and find peace there myself, regardless 🙂

  9. Awe such fun! That is so sweet about your grandma.

    I haven’t had a picnic in forever.
